The Hungarian National Gallery and Ludwig Museum design is a dynamic 46,200 sqm cultural complex conceived as a swirling tornado of art, where spaces, routes and atriums are carved from a turbulent mass. Located in Budapest's City Park, the building creates a welcoming and open environment that a…
Background
The design centers around a light-filled atrium and central courtyard topped by a skylight, creating artfully shadowed internal volumes through layers of dynamic building components and light-diffusing screens. This dramatic heart of the building connects to underground exhibition spaces through a mid-level mezzanine lobby, while the surrounding landscape features concentric elements, ramps, and stairs.
What We Did
Our team created comprehensive exterior and interior visualizations that captured the building's dynamic "swirling mass" concept, highlighting how spaces, routes and atriums would be carved from this turbulent form. We developed detailed night renderings showcasing how the continuous strip of glazing around the base would illuminate the structure, creating a striking presence in the park after dark. Through aerial integration, we demonstrated how the building would fit within the larger context of Budapest's City Park and the planned cultural axis. Our visualizations emphasized the dramatic central atrium with its skylight and the way daylight would penetrate deep into the building, illustrating how visitors would intuitively navigate through the chronologically arranged exhibition floors.
