Red Whale 1 is a 29,500 sqm shopping center refurbishment project in Mytishchi, Moscow Region, completed in 2013. The renovation transformed an 1980s-era mall with a radical facelift to both external and internal spaces, including a new glazed entrance, while maintaining operations throughout the…

Background

Originally constructed in the 1980s, Red Whale Shopping Centre had traded successfully for decades but faced increasing pressure from neighboring competitor shopping centers and the planned construction of Red Whale Phase Two. The refurbishment was strategically important to maintain both tenants and customers, with anchor tenants including Perekrestok supermarket, Technosila electronics, and Karo-Film multiplex. Located at Mytishchi railway station, Red Whale is one of the largest shopping centers built in the Moscow region and attracts 12,000-15,000 visitors daily, including customers from Moscow who come for various entertainment events.

What We Did

We created comprehensive interior and exterior visualizations for the Red Whale 1 refurbishment project, showcasing the dramatic transformation of this aging shopping center. Our renderings highlighted the distinctive design elements including the white "clouds" with integrated lighting that were introduced onto the existing red "egg crate" ceiling, the new floor tile patterns creating dynamic rhythm along the mall, and the structural screen-printed glass balustrades around all mall voids. We also visualized the new glass-clad escalators and the large strip window in the food court area that brings natural light into the space. Our visualizations helped communicate how this cost-focused refurbishment would significantly improve the shopping experience while delivering excellent value for money.
