River Mall is a 260,000 sqm shopping center designed for central Moscow in 2013. The concept draws inspiration from nature, particularly the ripple effect of a stone thrown into water, which is projected onto the exterior envelope while concentric circles shape the terrain with terraced park zone…
Background
This competition entry was prepared in a limited timeframe but was very well received by the client. With few immediate contextual clues, the architects took nature as a starting point, drawing upon natural patterns and colors that correspond to a historic vision of Moscow as a dense urban environment with fast-flowing rivers. The design concept was based on the dynamic, pulsating city life and the site's adjacency to the Moscow River, creating fantastic river views from the raised restaurant level with exclusive rooftop balconies.
What We Did
We created exterior visualizations and night renderings for the River Mall project, bringing to life the ripple-inspired architectural concept. Our visualizations highlighted the light organic canopy that links all elements together, creating a sense of dynamic movement throughout the scheme. The night renderings particularly emphasized how lighting would enhance the ripple effect on the exterior envelope, creating a distinctive landmark along the Moscow River. Our work helped communicate how this ambitious retail development would relate to its riverside setting while creating a memorable shopping destination in central Moscow.
